Physical and Occupational Therapy

Physical therapy comes in many forms and treats many different types of injuries and disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal systems. This may include problems with nerves, muscles, bones and joints in the body.

Physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) are integral components in a patient’s recovery. The goal is to increase functional ability with movement, strength building and pain reduction, making daily tasks and activities easier as the patient heals and improves fitness.

Occupational therapy interventions focus on adapting the environment, modifying the task, teaching the skill, and educating the patient/family in order to increase their performance of daily activities.

At Oakland Regional Hospital, our certified physical and occupational therapists often work together to meet the needs and goals of each patient.

Hand Therapy

Hand therapy is a highly specialized field of occupational therapy. Specialized hand rehabilitation is performed by certified hand occupational therapists that focus exclusively on hand injuries and associated injuries to the upper extremity. The upper extremity includes the elbow, the wrist, the hand and everything in between. Symptoms may include joint pain, muscle pain, post-surgical care, healing fractures, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel. Hand therapists can design and build custom splints and braces based on the patient’s needs, whether it is to protect a specific injury or to increase movement.

Work Related Injuries

For those suffering from a work related injury, Oakland Regional’s team offers functional therapy programs to expedite your recovery and get you back into action and prepare you to return to work.

Our therapists will simulate tasks and methods of your daily movements, discuss proper wound healing (if you had surgery), help you to improve motion, coordination, strength and endurance, and if necessary, discuss workstation ergonomics and modifications – all to help you perform your normal job tasks and return to daily living activities.
